This compares two birth charts on the eight classical kootas and returns the 36-point score used in traditional matchmaking. It works from each person’s Moon nakshatra and Moon sign, which is what Guna Milan is actually built on — not the sun sign.
Eight kootas, each weighted differently: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8. A score of 18 or above is the traditional minimum, 26 and above is considered a strong match.
Two kootas can score zero outright. Bhakoot dosha occurs when the Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart. Nadi dosha occurs when both people share the same nadi. Between them they account for 15 of the 36 points, which is why a match can look poor on total while being fine on the other six.
Guna Milan is one layer. It says nothing about Mangal Dosha, the strength of each seventh house, or the dasha periods either person is running. A 30-point match between two charts with difficult seventh houses is not the same as a 30-point match without them.
